How to Add Chapters to YouTube Videos: Rules, Timestamps and Naming
YouTube's chapter rules from the official help page, how to add timestamps by hand, how automatic chapters work, how to name chapters and the mistakes that stop them showing.
Chapters split a YouTube video into labeled sections on the progress bar. Viewers can see what is coming, jump to the part they need and come back to a section later. For long videos, such as tutorials, podcasts, travel vlogs and reviews, they make the whole video easier to use. This tutorial covers YouTube's rules, how to add chapters by hand, how automatic chapters work, how to name chapters well and the mistakes that stop them from appearing.
YouTube's chapter rules
According to YouTube's video chapters help page, checked in October 2026, manual chapters need:
- A list of timestamps and titles in the video's description.
- A first timestamp of 00:00.
- At least three timestamps, listed in ascending order.
- Chapters of at least 10 seconds each.
The same page says manual chapters override automatic chapters, and that the chapters feature is unavailable when the channel has active strikes or when the content may be inappropriate for some viewers. If your channel does not have chapter access yet, YouTube points you to its advanced features.
How to add chapters manually
- Watch your final export and write down the time where each new section starts. Use the exported file, since any trim changes the times.
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Content and select the video.
- In the description, add one line per chapter: the timestamp, a space and the title.
- Start with 00:00, even if the first section is a short intro.
- Save and check the progress bar on the watch page.
A description for a 14-minute travel vlog could look like this:
- 00:00 Why we chose Porto
- 01:12 Arriving at São Bento station
- 03:40 Breakfast in Bolhão market
- 06:25 The Ribeira walk
- 09:10 Port tasting across the river
- 12:30 Sunset at the viewpoint
For videos over an hour, use hours as well, for example 1:05:30. Keep each line simple: timestamp first, then the title, with nothing else before the time.
How automatic chapters work
YouTube can also generate chapters for you. Per the help page:
- The "Allow automatic chapters" box is checked by default for new uploads.
- You can turn it off for one video in its details, or for all uploads under Settings, Upload defaults, Advanced settings.
- Not all videos are eligible, and not all eligible videos will get automatic chapters.
- Chapters you add yourself replace the automatic ones.
Automatic chapters save time, but you do not control the titles or the split points. If the chapters matter for viewers, add them yourself.
How to name chapters well
A chapter title is a tiny headline. Viewers scan the list to decide where to go, so make every title tell them what they will get.
- Be specific. "Breakfast in Bolhão market" beats "Part 2". "Setting white balance" beats "Settings".
- Use the words people search for. In a tutorial, name the step the way a viewer would type it.
- Keep titles short so they fit on the progress bar on a phone. Two to six words is a good target.
- Use one style. All places, all steps or all questions, so the list reads like a table of contents.
- Avoid spoilers when the payoff matters. "The result" works better than giving away the answer in a story video.
- Skip filler chapters. A ten-second "Intro" chapter adds little. Name the first chapter after what the opening promises.
Where to split
Split where the topic, place or step changes. A tutorial gets one chapter per step. A podcast gets one per topic or story. A vlog gets one per place or part of the day. If two neighbouring chapters would get the same title, merge them.
Common mistakes
- The first timestamp is not 00:00. Starting at 00:05 or 0:01 breaks the list.
- Fewer than three timestamps. Two chapters are not enough.
- A chapter shorter than 10 seconds. Two timestamps placed too close together stop chapters from showing.
- Out of order. Timestamps must go up from top to bottom.
- Times from the wrong version. If you trimmed the video after writing the list, check every time again.
- Chapters only in a comment. The help page describes adding them in the description.
- Vague titles. "Part 1, Part 2, Part 3" gives viewers nothing to scan.
Plan chapters while you edit
The easiest chapters to write are the ones built into the edit. If each section already has a clear start, often with a title card, you only need to copy the times. Our guide on how long a YouTube video should be explains how to use retention reports alongside chapters.
How Sentarys long edits create chapters
When you edit a long video in Sentarys, the structure comes in chapters from the start. You upload all your files, up to 300 files and 12 hours of footage per project, and the AI logs every moment and builds chapters in the order things happened. Each chapter opens with a title card, with place names for trips, and gets its own music bed that dips under your voice. The edit also includes captions, b-roll over gaps and timelapse where nothing is said.
In the chapter editor you can swap scenes, trim or change the music in one chapter without touching the rest, then export in 1080p. Each title card marks a natural YouTube chapter point: note where it appears in the exported file and use it in your description. Sentarys also offers a YouTube publish kit for a long video, with a description that includes chapters, three thumbnails, titles and tags, for 1,800 credits.
Sentarys Pro is $10/month with 30,000 shared credits. Each workflow shows its estimate before you start. Long editing uses 80 credits per minute of footage the AI reads, with a 2,000-credit minimum, so a full monthly balance covers about 375 source minutes when it all goes to long edits. A new account gets the first chapter of its long edit free, with a small watermark; Pro exports are watermark-free. See Sentarys pricing.
FAQ
Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?
Check the rules: the first timestamp must be 00:00, you need at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds. Chapters are also unavailable when the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.
Can YouTube add chapters automatically?
Yes. Automatic chapters are allowed by default on new uploads, but not every video is eligible. Chapters you add in the description replace them.
How many chapters should a video have?
At least three, as YouTube requires. Beyond that, add one per real change of topic, place or step. For editing tips on long videos, read how to edit a YouTube video with AI.
